This year in Little Elm, our district is focusing on “The One Thing”. Our district is reading the book, “The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth behind Extraordinary Results by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.” In this book it opens with the quote if you chase two rabbit then you will not catch either one. While a simple statement it bring to mind that we can only do one thing at time. We may think that we can multi-task in actuality we can not. In fact, we waste time as we require our brain to switch between topics and decisions. At the end of the day, we are fatigued while we feel like we have done nothing at all. The reality is that we have been chasing at least two if not more than two rabbits at the same time and not caught anything. The book goes on to explain that if you focus on the one thing that is the pivotal changing element in your life then everything else will follow.
So how do you find your one thing? We at Little Elm did the “5 Why’s protocol. You start with an idea...and then ask why is that important, why do you think that? Why is that the way it is? After writing it down, you ask again the why question again. You keep going until you get to the essential idea that makes the most impact. Then you take this one thing and focus on it and improving it until you have mastered it.
So what is our one thing for this next coming year as a chapter? In reflection, last year our chapter faced many challenges, heartaches, and emotions. We now have a brand new slate to start the 2017-2018 year. What is your one thing? How will each one of us find our one thing and be able to focus on it so we can be a successful chapter? During this past month, the executive board and I have been asking these types of questions and figuring out how we can fix and bridge the gaps that have been forming in our chapter so that at the end of this year we will become a healthier chapter. Come join us on the journey this year. Hopefully, we will find some of our old friends and make new friends. We might be able to fix and create new ways to conduct our chapter business. So let’s get hopping and let's chase and catch one rabbit instead of two..
Happy August and September everyone!
